Hi Frank,

What a coincidence. I actually have a friend who is also looking for a similar job in Japan. To be honest, I think it will be difficult to get job dealing with music or art history. Teaching is probably the most common way to come to Japan with your qualifications. However, to get a good job (university position, private international schools, etc.) you will either have to have qualifications for teaching a foreign language (English is by far the most sought after) and teaching experience, or be completely fluent in Japanese. Every now and then, there are positions at universities or private institutions that hire foreigners to teach subjects other than English.

Working at kindergarten is a different story. There are tons of jobs at kindergartens available throughout Japan. Most of them deal with teaching English and/or assisting the certified teachers with daily duties. Many of these positions don’t require a Master’s degree or even experience. It seems like positions in nursery schools/kindergartens are becoming more popular too. There are also a ton of jobs teaching children at private day care centers or English schools. To be honest, many of these places don’t pay well. There are some that have good pay, but the work requires a lot of energy (lots of classes and watching over groups of kids for the day). In reply to Jessica. Hi Jessica. Maybe I can try and answer your questions. Because of COVID, no one from the USA can enter Japan as of right now. Unfortunately the new ALTs (the ones who were shortlisted last year and were supposed to come last August) are still unable to come to Japan. Since these new ALTs won't be able to come to Japan till the end of May at the earliest (if Japan opens up their travel restrictions), I am assuming this must affect the application process for next year. I would check their official site for the latest information. Hopefully things will improve and the new JETs and future JETs can come to Japan without further delays.

Hoo boy, lot’s of toxicity in these comments. I would like to apologize on behalf of my fellow manga enjoyers here and say that we are not always this annoying it’s just sometimes get a little too attached to our favorites and have trouble understanding that is someone else’s OPINION (albeit a well researched one, I’d say), and just because they disagree does not mean they should shit on it. Guess that’s just part of the internet though… 🙁
